St. Lawrence Joins College Presidents' Climate Initiative
St. Lawrence University has joined with over 450 American colleges and universities in committing to "carbon neutrality" in its campus operations, with President Daniel F. Sullivan signing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.
SLU Environmental Action Plan
In 2006 the St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees “…approved, with great enthusiasm, a resolution to adopt a commitment to the environment as a core University value….”1 The SLU Environmental Resolution, a document developed by students2 and brought forth by Thelmo, provides a foundation from which we must now explore how, in practical terms, this commitment might unfold.
For information on how to participate, please contact Louise Gava '07 (lgava@stlawu.edu) or Eric Williams-Bergen (ewilliamsbergen@stlawu.edu).

First Wireless NOW ‘Trayless’
New starting this fall: Dana Dining Hall will be ‘Trayless.'
Eliminating trays from student dining facility cuts food waste, saves soap and water (used to wash trays) and maybe even helps ward off the ‘freshman fifteen'. Many schools that have gone ‘trayless' have found it to be a simple action that has profound consequences. This is just one of the continuing efforts of the dining facilities to help the University become more environmentally sustainable.
Reuse Initiative Gets a New (Used) Home
Fall 2008 Reuse Initiative Operating Hours
Tuesday, August 26th 10-2 (students only)
Wednesday, August 27th 10-2 (entire SLU community)
Thursday, August 28th 10-2 (entire SLU community)
Do to the popularity of the Reuse Initiative we have decided to make a permanent location for the storage and sale of gently used goods each fall. True to its mission the Reuse Initiative has moved into a room that was once used for storage purposes, repainted with leftover paint and had shelves made from old doors.
Now located in the basement of Reiff, the ‘Reuse Basement' aims to keep commonly desired dorm and class items out of the landfill. Remember to come by and pick up some great things for your dorm for a VERY low price. And don't forget each spring we rely on your donations to keep the initiative going.
Cooperative Compost in Canton
Composting is a topic that has been getting a lot of attention from the SLU student body for the past few years. As of August 2008 St. Lawrence will be operating an organized compost facility once again but this time with a new twist.
The University and the Village of Canton have combined efforts to turn leaves, branches and other organic matter from village and university landscaping into a valuable soil amendment. The site selected for the operation is a field across from the Appleton Riding Arena on Route 68.
